Deerfield
Beach Middle School is a very important part of our community
life, and as such deserves a certain amount of attention in
highlighting some of the wonderful things that are taking place
at DBMS.
Our sixth
graders have adjusted easily to their new surroundings and
their schedules, and are a friendly presence in our school.
They take pride in what they do and are genuinely motivated to
academically excel.
Research
tells us that we remember best the real things that we do and
see. Therefore, in building knowledge there is nothing like
seeing it, touching it, doing it, hearing it and or smelling
it.
Here are
some of our "hands-on" curriculum areas and related events that
our sixth grade busy bees are/or will be working on:
The
Deerfield Beach Middle School magnet program group is planning
our annual trip to Williamsburg and Washington D.C. The
students are fundraising and the money they earn goes into
their personal account. There is a math activity that goes
along with this.
In Social
Studies, the students are mummifying Chickens (Egypt
unit).
In Science,
students are researching for their forthcoming Science Fair
topic.
In Language
Arts, students will be working on the Mythology unit. This will
involve creative activities such as, creating a costume of a
Greek God/Goddess and making a family tree for
Zeuss.
The ESOL
team is reading a story that includes a recipe for "Turkish
Delight". This group will be exploring their culinary talents
in the home economic room to get a taste of this special
dish.
The ESE
department is putting together a “Saturday craft fair” to raise
money for the students trip to Orlando.
And
finally, students have an option to join our special clubs,
extra curriculum activities and sports offered by
DBMS.
We strive
for academic excellence; this is our commitment to the young
people in our school. We are looking forward to an exciting and
successful 2008-2009 school year!
