The Accelerated Reader software provides teachers with a convenient computer based method to monitor the reading that their individual students do. A student first chooses and reads a book then takes a multiple-choice quiz about the contents of the book by entering answers into the computer. Accelerated Reader grades the quiz and awards the student points based on the length and difficulty of the book. The software keeps track of which books the students have read and how they have been doing on their quizzes. The teacher can use this information to see at what grade level each student is reading, whether the student is comfortable at that level and if the student is making progress in developing reading skills. Accelerated Reader also allows students to set their own goals (for example, earning a certain number of points during a marking period), which encourages the students to read independently.
