What is Middle Years International Baccalaureate?

Middle Years International Baccalaureate Magnet is an accelerated honors program. An internationally standardized course of study for highly motivated and academically talented students. Higher level thinking skills, integrated curriculum, thematic units, and intercultural awareness combine to provide a well-rounded education. This unique magnet challenges students to become self-directed learners and responsible world citizens.

What are the entrance criteria?

Residency north of Commercial Boulevard
Level 4 or 5 in Reading AND Math.
A minimum GPA of 3.0

What makes this program unique?

Unlike every other magnet program in the county, the IB Middle Year Program is a rigorous academic program focusing on ALL SUBJECT AREAS rather than one area of interest or ability. The entrance requirements are the most stringent in Broward County. Only the top ten percent of students are eligible for admission. At the core of the program are the Areas of Interaction: Approaches to Learning, Community Service, Environment, Health and Social Education, and Homo Faber. Each of these themes is interwoven into the curriculum through the eight required subjects. There is a strong emphasis on foreign language and advanced course work. Teachers must be trained by the International Baccalaureate Organization.

The Eight Subject Areas

Arts

Encourages identification of creative abilities and mastery of appropriate techniques.

Foreign Language

Focuses on the ability to speak and comprehend in either French or Spanish.

Humanities

Integrates History with Geography.

Language Arts

Includes reading, writing, speaking, listening, and literature.

Mathematics

Understanding reasoning processes, application of mathematics, and strategies for problem-solving.

Physical Education

Physical, emotional, intellectual, and social development of a healthy lifestyle.

Science

Develops the understanding of the scientific approach to problem-solving.

What classes will I take?

Focusing on the Whole Child, the magnet program requires that the following courses be taken each year:
Arts (Art or Band)
Foreign Language (French or Spanish)
Humanities (History and Geography)
Language Arts (Reading, Writing, Speaking, Listening, and Literature)
Mathematics (Advanced Math/Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, Geometry)
Physical Education (Mind and Body)
Science (General Science, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics)
Technology (Technological Literacy and Communication)
 

Is Transportation Provided?

Yes! Any student who lives north of Commercial Boulevard and at least two miles from Deerfield Beach Middle School is eligible for transportation. Depot stops, typically located at the elementary or middle school closest to your home, will be utilized for pick up and drop off of students.

Teaches the value of learning and the skills necessary to become a self-directed learner.

Community Service

Develops a sense of awareness and responsibility with regard to the local and global community. Minimum of twenty four hours annually.

Environment

Recognizes the interdependence of man and the environment while asking students
to accept responsibility for maintaining the natural world.

Health and Social

Prepares the student for a physically and mentally healthy life, includes personal, interpersonal, and social skills development.

Homo Faber

Focusing on creativity, students learn to appreciate the human capacity and strive to transform, enjoy and improve the quality of life by applying science, materials, resources and energy to reach solutions to needs.
